abreviation of the anglo-american Quasi Stellar astronomical radio-source). Astres with the appearance of a star and of intense luminosity, who’s spectre leans strongly towards red. Quazars were discovered in 1960.
Interpreted as a Doppler-Fizeau effect within the universes expansion. The red spectre implies that they have traveled great distances. It turns out that these astres are much smaller than galaxies (approx. 100 times smaller), but much brighter (from 100 to 1000 times more). They apparently form the visible core of active galaxies which are very far away. Because of how distant they are, quazars representa vital source of information about the history of the galaxy. Their fantastic energy seems to be due to the rays given off by gaz falling into a black hole of great mass (about 100 million times that of the sun) which is in their centre.
Some quazars give of jets of animated matter who’s speed appears faster than that of light ; this phenomenon can be explaned by geometrical considerations. There are several examples of quazars who have several images (gravitational illusion), because their light is bent by the gravitational field of closer galaxies in the same direction according to Einsteins theory of relativity.
